the texture of pollen

A couple of sketches I have done while here in Colorado. With the climate as crazy as it is, Spring sprunging and pollen polluting, about the only thing I dedicate myself to is snotting.

Editorial EnComa

This is a heads up for the Editorial EnComa that we, a group of talented, intelligent and artistic friends who sometimes get bored with life, are creating in Guanajuato, Mexico.  We are utilizing as many recycled materials and as much free time as we can to produce a series of collectable editions that inspire and involve the readers.  Narrative, poetry and visual arts come together to create books and reduce waste in our landfills.  I am currently out of the country, wandering about my own... all the while gathering and producing on my own.  Keep your eyes peeled and save your pennies (or pesos) so that you can be among the first to own a copy of Editorial EnComa... books for these times of crisis.

creative procrastination

I have been invited to be the artist in residence at Colorado College during the month of September. The theme: my creative process.  This is where I am found out as an impostor... a fraud.  How will I possibly be able to explain this:

Step 1*: make some coffee. Drink it. If you smoke, do that...
Step 2*: read a book, the newspaper, some blogs, listen to the music posted on your friend's walls...
Step 3*: realize how beautiful food is while you prepare lunch [breakfast or dinner]...
Step 4*: doodle as much as possible, keep a book or note pad handy at all times...
Step 5*: dance any time the opportunity presents itself. Hang out with animals...
Step 6*: make a mess. Clean it up. Make another mess...
Step 7*: cut and paste and paint over and write on top of, mix images and text. Never erase...

*It is important to remember... these instructions are not set in stone, are adaptable and interchangeable. I only picked seven because I like that number.

Jamaica

I can't catch my breath. The sunlight, the shadows... veins and petals. Beauty is all around and in the morning, before the noise of man deafens me, the silence is golden. Now... how do I harvest this thing to make some agua fresca?

No puedo respirar.

Where are you from?

my aunt and uncle just called...
they've been in DC for a few days now -I stayed here to take care of the kitties- and they come home tomorrow.
they didn't say it, didn't have to, I heard it in their voices the desire to get back... the anticipation of arriving at the house... to their home... to security and comfort.
it made me sad... made me jealous... I don't remember the last time I felt that. At home... nor when the next opportunity to feel that will present itself...
belong somewhere... to someone, maybe.
I don't know how to answer when someone asks:
where are you from?

pertenecer a algún sitio... a alguien, tal vez.

a model life

So... far from perfection and heading towards wrinkles, I would like to brag about some talented friends of mine.  Fotographers, artists and designers... they have made me feel beautiful and given me some memorable experiences to share with my hypothetic cryogenically fabricated grandchildren. Some pixelation may be in order... take out your contact lenses if seeing my skin makes yours crawl.

Momma told me about the Art House Co-op's Sketchbook Project which I loved working on and feel that I made some great advances in my personal creative process.  My precious friends Michelle and LJ also participated.  Here are a few of the pages... the whole book can be seen on the Art House Co-op website.

Casa Museo Gene Byron

The House of Gene Byron Museum located in Marfil, Guanajuato is one of the most tranquil and inspiring haciendas that I have visited. My dear friend Lolo came to me with the idea of producing a book of drawings of the home in order to draw more attention to the museum and all that it has to offer.  Please visit the museum's website for more information!
