at the altar [a poem]

With nails as red a Jesus’ blood
I sit before the altar
there’s yet one challenge left to face
don’t let my focus falter.
With heads of babes
the palms they read
the feathers one blue only
the cyclops he’s eternity
and knowing this he’s lonely.
With cougar face the girl she stares
mi jefe se robaron
a su hija
the bride stripped bare
the shells and showing one.
One thing’s half missing with partial face
the world’s a heavy load
with Alice under foot
the hound
lights the way to gold.
Ché qué decís
the ginger aid
sleeps among the fields
where fresas smoke
the girls who dance
And John the saint
he heals.

Tokens of Amor

The Skillery's Nasvhille Creativity Summit was two full days full of creative collaboration and focusing on ways to grow as an individual while giving back to the city which is endless in its inspiration.

I have been out of the bubble of academia for a while so the feel of the weekend was laced with nostalgia for the days that were crisp with the energy of exchanging knowledge.  The workshop on Saturday the 9th was more reminiscent of a lecture-based course with speakers, power point presentations and only a couple of breaks to go out and soak up the returning sunshine that has been away during the winter months.  We were well caffeinated by Beve Mobile Coffee and I finally got to sample the goods of Bang Candy Company for lunch. I was impressed by and encouraged by the strong voice that women had among the guest speakers.  The panel discussion with Liza Graves, Kate Mills and Kaelah Bee was just what I needed to top off all of the preparations I had done for the Valentine-making workshop the next day.

I have to say, before anything else, that I would not have pulled off the class if it hadn't been for my roommate. She let me load her car down and offered to spend her morning off to help me out by arranging, rearranging, unpacking and sorting, tasting and moving everything around the shop all while I steadily babbled my thoughts out loud and worked myself into an excited mess.

For me, the preparations that go into teaching a class are similar to those that go into creating a painting. Planning the activities, looking at the workspace, gathering supplies and then making the projects before hand are for my pre-class routine what the laying out the brushes and solvents, scraping the palette and stretching the canvas are for my process of painting. I want the participants in the class to feel that they have the freedom to stand or sit and move around while working. Having options at your fingertips and the opportunity to use different materials on a whim allows the dream to become tangible.   I hope to provide a comfortable environment that enables the imagination during my classes.

It was a joy seeing how the scraps of paper and pieces of ribbon were used transform the maps and magazines into Tokens of Amor that will be shared with loved ones this coming Thursday.  It was a wonderful day of loving love as my friend, Janelle of Panama Red Arts, says.

a score is 20 years

In the twenty-plus-two days since last reporting for duty,
I have done a few things many times over.

The bandits in the kitchen of Más Tacos Por Favor
have taken me as one of their own.
I spend the daylight hours learning the trade and testing the tacos.

By night, I creep about below the floorboards
fixated on affixing bones to metal to wood.
Learning to "appreciate the impermanence of the human condition." -droot

Between the taco stand and mi casa, there are homes.
There are lives and people and everything that happens
will happen today.

Durante los 22 días de mi ausencia,
he repetido poquitas cosas varias veces.

pasara hoy.

water aerobics

I am in the process of reassimilation.
The East Park Community Center has helped immensely.  The beautifully maintained facility has quite an impressive offering of activities that fit within my [currently-job-hunting] budget.  It is near enough to my house that I can ride my bike and so I get to count that as a warm up when I arrive to take water aerobics in the indoor pool.  There is a walking track, a gym with exercise equipment, a kids summer program and group classes like yoga, boot camp and Zumba.

Emily and the ladies that come to her water aerobics class have welcomed me warmly and have already been a great inspiration to me. If it weren't for them I would never keep up an exercise routine that requires an every-other day bathing schedule.  Their personalities and enthusiasm have also offered me a grand source of motivation for my paintings.

Bohème Collectif

Spend tonight, the second Saturday of June, on the East Side.  Nashville is a great town to be if you are into the arts; music, theater and visual artists thrive in an environment as alive as this one.

And after all of the other shops near 5 Points have closed, come spend the evening at the Bohème Collectif.  The five dollars at the door gets you a drink for each hand to make the DJ's music that much sweeter and the paintings that much more profound.

lighting up the dark

I found it in a palindrome.
My purpose, I share with the moth.

in girum imus nocte et consumimur igni

we go wandering at night and are consumed by fire

Lo encontré en un palíndromo.
Comparto mi proposito con la polilla.

in girum imus nocte et consumimur igni

vamos girando en la noche y somos consumidos por el fuego

a pound of [lead] feathers

Gray clouds hang in the sky and tumble over each other churning along with the slightly humid evening breeze down into the valley, along the creek and back up and over the neighboring hill. Perfect weather for welding with the crisp air against my cheek a nice contrast against the flame of the torch.

We are officially in production mode.

Click the following links to check out
some of my friend's creations
as well as some new projects of my own!

Pesadas.

downtown

So maybe there is a little leap between reality and Miss Petula's lyrics when considering downtown Columbia, Tennessee.

Not many lights that are brighter there, not many movie shows to make you forget your cares... but something is waiting there behind the For Rent signs.

The energy among the musty historic walls, though only in it's potential stage, is exciting and lacks only that first push to earn the kinetic title and move forward into a bustling and rich spot in the city.

The character is not lackluster but is in need of a little spit-shine and a loving hand to bring it back into the lime light.

There are a few businesses that keep on truckin'... somehow...

A few changes need to be made in order to go from musty store fronts to some little places to go where they never close... but I'm confident it can be done.

The old Helm's building is being used as an art gallery that has created quite a stir among the seekers of wine and snacks on the last Friday of every month.  The more events that are held downtown may open the community's eyes to the opportunities that are in the heart of the city.
